Everyone knows Ellen Degeneres is a funny lady who loves music and loves to dance. Even President Barack Obama had to a do a lil dance while on her show (see video below). Ellen may not be an equal replacement for American Idol’s Paula Abdul because she hasn’t had a career in music – but she is known for loving, supporting and helping artists. Just ask former Atlantic Records recording artist Ellie Lawson.
Today I saw on google how “the world’s largest recording companies are suing The Ellen DeGeneres Show, claiming producers violated their copyrights by playing more than 1,000 songs without permission”. Yet again, the major labels continue to turn the enjoyment of music into negative ways of making money. Are they that incapable of being innovative? Are they that broke? Or is their greed making them desperate?
Remember the Minnesota Mom, Jammie Thomas-Rasset, who was hit with 1.2 Million dollar fine for illegal file sharing. She downloaded like 24 songs… soooooo that comes out to like $80,000 per song! I mean what the heck! I could understand if she was making a living off of it – cause that is stealing – but, she’s just a single Mother of four, who isn’t rich, was probably stressed out, and trying to listen to some music to feel good.
Has making and sharing music really come down to this??? Could The Beatles even have become “The Beatles” in today’s music industry? Now that we’re seeing the obvious results of business men instead of artists calling the shots. Being “signed” doesn’t mean what it used to. Most real artists – started out as “starving artists”. Now with indie labels and indie artists we are getting a chance to see what the business looks like when Artists are in charge…. and giving away albums for free is just one example of what they choose to do.
All in all, I am fine with the “majors” continuing to shoot themselves in the foot – because their every mistake becomes indie labels and indie artists opportunity for success.
